Nine questions we get every week
How long does vinyl decking last?
Most vinyl decks go thirty years and beyond. The membrane is warrantied 15 years and our workmanship 10, and DekSmart's warranty transfers to the next owner when you sell.
Can you go over my existing deck?
Usually yes, and it is the cheapest good option. Coming off wood we take the old boards up, prepare the surface and sheet it before the vinyl goes down. Coming off old vinyl is simpler again: the membrane comes off and the new one goes on.
Does it get hot or slippery?
Lighter colours stay noticeably cooler. The surface is textured and rated slip-resistant, and it grips better wet than a stained wood deck does.
How long does the job take?
Two to four days on site for a resurface. One to two weeks for a full tear-off and rebuild, depending on size, stairs and railing.
Can you do it in winter?
Yes. We work through the winter as long as the temperature is above 0°C and the deck is dry. Calgary gives us plenty of those days between November and March, and a winter booking means your deck is finished before anyone else has started theirs.
Will it match my railing?
Usually. We take the colour of your posts and top rail into account when we bring samples. If you are changing railing too, do both at once and save a second trip.
Do I need a permit?
Resurfacing an existing deck generally does not. New decks, higher than 0.6 m or attached to the house, usually do. We handle drawings and the application.
What happens if you find something once you start?
Mostly we do not, because Cameron read the deck at the estimate and priced it there. If anything does turn up once the old surface is off, you get a photograph and a price before we carry on. Nothing lands on your invoice that you have not agreed to.
Do you clean up?
Every night. The yard is protected and cleaned daily, and we do a final walkthrough with you before we leave.
